Links with other orchestras

Following a very successful exchange with Blockfluitensemble Praetorius in 2002-03, HRS hopes to develop links with other recorder orchestras within and beyond the UK.

As part of this linking programme, in July 2011, the Thames Valley Recorder Orchestra was invited to join HRS to perform ‘A Tale of Two Orchestras’ in the Chapel of the University of Chichester as part of Chichester Festivities. A reciprocal ‘linking’ concert with TVRO is planned for the summer of 2013.

Outreach programme

HRS seeks to introduce the recorder to a wider audience, to improve the ‘image’ of the recorder as a reputable instrument and to extend awareness of recorder orchestra music. Plans include:

Adopt-a-School

In 2008, a very successful joint initiative between HRS and St. Alban's School in Havant (Hampshire) involved young players from the school working on specific repertoire and then contributing to a concert by playing with HRS.

HRS now proposes to ‘adopt’ no more than one school a year to similarly enhance the playing opportunities of school children and introduce their family and friends to the wider opportunities of recorder players. This initiative was supported by The Elgar Society Education Partnership.

Mini Workshop and Small Group Performance

By popular request, HRS has initiated a series of school visits, providing a small group performance (usually a Quintet) and workshop for young recorder players.

Enquiries about Adopt-a-School or Mini Workshops should be made to HRS.

HRS / Warblington Youth Ensemble

HRS and Warblington School Music Department have combined forces to introduce a new ensemble class for young recorder players in years 5, 6 and 7. The weekly sessions in Warblington School Drama Studio on Wednesdays from 5.00 – 6.00 pm aim to encourage development on all the recorders and offer performance opportunities to all their young players.

This is not a class for absolute beginners. Young players should have a basic working knowledge of the descant recorder. If your own children, or pupils at your school, would like to join the ensemble, you can phone 01329 834297 for more details, or contact HRS.
